SM City Clark dishes out savory Turkish doner

Kapampangans are culturally carnivorous—one can easily spot it in their tables daily and during festivities dishes like pochero, menudo, afritada, caldereta and the likes. The savory goodness of meats, both red and white, appeals to their palate that it would be so easy to like other cuisines in parts of the world that also fell in love with the meat like Brazil, Germany, and Turkey.

Turkish delights are another and boast off meaty doner that is just now on town, ready to attract our meaty culture.  And as SM City Clark welcomes its another tenant, Ala Turka Istanbul Doner, taste buds will soon ask for more, redefining Middle Eastern palate more than the familiar taste of kebabs and shawarma.

The new restaurant to stop and dine with—Ala Turka Istanbul Doner, shares its theme with the richness of rotisserie, making sure meat is oozing with umami taste of the juices.  It is said, in fact, that the first doner kebab was invented in Bursa Turkey in the 19th century although apparently, roasting meat is as old as the primitive men at the onset of the discovery of making fire.

Just when you crave for barbeque, right? But what about making it a little more savory with a colorful concoction of fresh vegetables like tomatoes or onions to make a shawarma we all know? Differentiate Ala Turka Istanbul Doner.

Ala Turka Istanbul Doner takes pride of its uniquely juicy doner kebab where slices of marinated meats are rolled up to embrace the searing hot vertical skewer, releasing that yummy juice that makes the most of meat. Because it is self-basting, a doner contains the richness of the juices in the meat itself, which is made possible given that the skewer is vertical and not the other way around when one does his barbeque. But doner kebab is no ordinary barbeque, the perfectly cooked piled of meat are sliced thinly later and are paired with salad and a pita bread, making us imagine a shawarma that is not.

A Turkish doner however is no longer exclusive in the Middle East, sure reason why it is now in SM City Clark! Just as there are variations on the Chinese bun and Mexican tortilla, this equally delighting doner has similarities with other places worldwide. In Europe, for example, it is often paired with French fries, sometimes even taken as a side dish, others with flavored rice. No matter how, a Turkish doner surely appeals to meat-loving patrons.

And never forget that there is a Turkish pizza—which this new tenant claims to be its specialty: round, thin, dough bread, of course the size of the pizza, heavily raining with minced meats of various kinds. It is also drizzled with the citrusy tang of lemon juice rolled up delectably with ripe tomatoes, pungent onions, fresh parsley, and crisp lettuce. And oh, do not forget its name is lahmacun.

Ala Turka Istanbul Doner is now available in SM City Clark, located at the Meeting Place.

GCINA MHLOPHE-BECHER’S SOUTH AFRICAN STORIES AT SM

Young and young at heart Filipinos will have the rare opportunity to see storytelling South African style as Gcina Mhlophe-Becher performs her remarkable narration, acting, and storytelling skills at the SM Supermalls this February.

In this joint project between the South African Embassy and the SM Supermalls, Gcina will treat mallgoers to her award winning performances on Sunday, February 20 at 2:00 PM at the 18th Travel Tour Expo at the SMX Convention Center and at 4:00 PM at the Second Floor of the Entertainment Wing at the SM Mall of Asia. She will weave her storytelling magic on Monday, February 21 at 11:00 AM at SM City Pampanga and at 3:00 PM at SM City Clark.

South Africa’s favorite teller of tales has had an extraordinary professional career and her achievements have had a profound impact on South African culture, arts, and heritage. Dedicated to preserving the art of storytelling as a means of keeping history alive, as well as to encourage and motivate children to read Gcina has been writing and performing on stage and on screen for more than twenty years.

By learning stories, we learn to communicate and say what we mean, Gcina says in an interview with Leila Summers. One of the reasons I love telling stories to young people is to encourage them to use words and language.  Stories are a way of bonding the family, and yes, storytelling is healing.

Gcina adds that stories opens doors. It is trans-gender, trans-ages, trans-generations, trans-cultures, and trans-religions.  And that is very empowering. Her reason for traveling the world to share her storytelling skills? I tell stories in order to wake up stories in other people, she says.  Every living being has a story to tell.

Inspired by her storytelling grandmother, she has earned her renown in poetry and storytelling since 1979; and has won 34 awards in publications and writing, as well as literature, storytelling, and her promotion of African culture.  She is also a theater actress, and has won awards for her stage performances in New York, Chicago, Edinburgh, and Africa

Dont miss Gcina Mhlophe-Bechers unforgettable storytelling performances on February 20 at the SMX Convention Center and the SM Mall of Asia; and on February 21 at SM City Pampanga and SM City Clark.

Gigantic ‘Little Drummer Boy’ thumps SM City Clark

Merry ChriSMs all the way! This is the warmest message the SM City Clark family can give to all the mall lovers for the merriest season as it also rocks everyone with the grand display of the  ‘Giant Drummer Boy’ at the Event Centre this November 06, 2010.

A mechanical doll, which is synonymous to the poor but giving boy from the classic carol ‘The Little Drum Boy’, it measures up to 23 feet, making it the center stage for this year’s Christmas motif for SM City Clark. Starting on Saturday, everyone can now fulfill a true blue Christmas playground as the ‘Giant Drummer Boy’ arrives. This should be more fun with glittering lights that call for the yuletide as well as different renditions of famous Christmas tunes.

Every year, SM City Clark has been consistent in transforming its place with Christmas fantasy themes that all children—and children at heart, would love. From the Giant Santa Clause, Giant Gingerbread House and last year’s Giant Snow Men, now comes another enormous version called The Giant Drummer Boy.

Popularly came from a Christmas song by the pianist Katherine Davis, ‘The Little Drum Boy’ tells about a penniless boy who delighted both the Holy Mother and baby Jesus by his playful and giving drumbeats. A classic carol, no childhood can ever forget that famous ‘rum pum pum pum’ hum which, for a record, actually includes 21 repeats from the entire lyrics!

‘The Little Drum Boy’ (1941) from that on has become a surefire hit not only from happy folks excited of Christmas but also to famous musicians with versions from fashion icon Marlene Dietrich, rock star David Bowie, to the cute and full of lesson program called Trapp Family Singer. In fact, even Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey had their own. Who could not love the ‘The Little Drum Boy’?

The song also reminds us that the best gift for the greatest Birthday Celebrant of all mankind is sheer charity, no matter how small. And what better way if one can have something to spend this Christmas than a strolling of fun with family and friends at SM City Clark to meet the huge ‘Giant Drummer Boy’ one can ever see!

But the fun never stops as tons of exciting events will surely delight our valued shoppers. The Pyromusical show will illuminate the sky all Saturdays of December, 8 PM at the Meeting Place. Be thrilled as Santa Clause will be meeting kids, listening to wishes and posing for pictures all Saturdays and Sundays of December at Cyberzone!

Merry ChriSMs all the way!

Care for Our Future: Celebrate Children’s Month

In recognition of our most valued and youngest member of the society, SM City Clark through their Program on Youth and Children’s Welfare, celebrated National Children’s Month last October 27, 2010 with various “child-friendly” campaigns, simultaneously, with 40 SM malls nationwide.

“With more than 3 million customers going to our malls daily, and approximately 1.4 million being children, we have committed to help future generations reach their full potential by initiating programs that promote an environment of learning, activities  which instill home-grown values and embrace education, and events which foster talent as well as children’s rights “SM is now beyond shopping, entertainment, and leisure.  It is now about taking affirmative action in our social responsibilities. It is about taking initiatives, in being instrumental, in caring for children, the best way we can.

And truly, it will take more than just a “City” to achieve that goal.  So together with parents, tenant-partners, various government institutions and NGOs, SM City Clark prepared a month long calendar of kid’s activities which included Global Handwashing Day (Oct.15), wherein thousands of children, simultaneously washed their hands properly, while learning about the importance of basic hygiene and health care.

SM Supermalls also invited thousands of students to watch environmental films (for free) and participate in a Green Film Festival (every 3rd  Monday and Tuesday of the month), as they encourage children to be responsible stewards of the environment.

The United Nations Parade last Oct.24 gathered thousands of kids in different shapes and sizes, representing 192 U.N. member countries, as they went around the mall in friendly competition, for the best national costume.

And as part of the culminating activity, The Mall Management and staff, together with SM Foundation and various partners, will treat more than 7,000 orphans and street children across all SM Malls for a day of fun and learning. But prior to the activity, the staff were already trained to handle “special” children, while facilities have been enhanced to ensure that the mall is safe and comfortable enough to accommodate tiny hands and feet, wherever they go.

For those who wish to extend assistance to less privileged children,  every purchase of one (1) SM Supermalls bottled water at the Foodcourt or any SM food outlet will allow you to support two (2) children in Capiz, through UNICEF and SM Cares program by SM Prime Holdings.

So as we celebrate children’s month this October, let us safeguard our future.  Help care for children.
